Three words distinguish Weller vases--tall, dark, and handsome. While some vases and design lines are light, Weller gave designers more latitude to explore the use of black and other dark colors in sophisticated ways. Lines suggest artistic acquaintance with European art forms and the impact of Art Nouveau on household decoration.
Line names took purchasers far from the Ohio River Valley: Majolica, Jap Birdimal, Roma, Eocean, Etna and Chengku. Shapes reflected classic Asian and Mediterannean pottery, and novel glazes, including several metallics, suggested grander materials than simple clay. Weller relied on and recognized the talents of its designers, some of whose names are attached to specific designs.
Dark "citified" lines, deeply incised forms (a "draped," form imitating fabric and "burnt" or "scratched" textures) and strong references to European decorative techniques targeted very adult audiences. Lines like Baldwin Apple and Hudson reminded customers of US roots, but Weller addressed the taste of a country beginning to learn about a wider world.
