Roseville pottery bowls were not for cooking. Often paired with matching candlesticks or wall pockets, these "console" bowls were intended to brighten a dining-room sideboard or living-room cabinet. Their charming shapes and decorative elements made Roseville bowls especially susceptible to counterfeiting.
Roseville complicated this susceptibility by marking its pieces manufactured between 1927 and 1935 with paper or foil labels--surely often removed, like price-tags, by purchasers.
(From 1936 on, Roseville pieces were embossed with a large trademark, adding a possibly too-expensive extra step for would-be forgers). Counterfeiting of this popular pottery continues even today. Early copies contributed to early "made in Japan" sneers, and copies are now manufactured mostly in China. Lacking original molds and design specifications, most copies are visibly inferior. Collector websites monitor old and new attempts to pollute this collectible market.
