Two words describe McCoy vases: "flair" and "fashion." Like its jardinieres, vases reflect concern with design and texture strong enough to stand on its own, whether performing its intended function or contributing an independently decorative touch.
"Flair" is both literal and figurative. The favorite cornucopia shape, narrow at the bottom and widely curved at the top appears and reappears in many designs--McCoy vases tend to say "sure, there's room for another flower or two."
Even the classic bud-vase undergoes a flair; five floral tubes are clustered in what was known as a "fingers" design.
"Fashion" involved adapting shapes to current design interests; McCoy vases appear as feathers, flowers, and classical urns. Heavy reliance on incised textures and single- or two-color glazes characterize these pieces.
One extremely popular line involves flowers holding flowers--the Lily, Tulip, and other members of this family stand independently in ebullient shapes and naturalistic colors, suggesting the cut flowers to come.
